Scout was removed from her owner by a police officer in a neighboring community. At the time, nobody knew what was wrong with Scout but everyone could see she was in very bad shape. In fact, the officer wasn't sure she would make it another day and that's why he removed her immediately. He brought Scout to PETS (Protecting Even the Strays) for care. As you can see from the photos, Scout was in horrible shape. She was covered with bloody sores and pustules and was extremely underweight for her age (9 months). Her eye was swollen and red and she appeared to have some urine scalding on her back legs. We've heard she was crated the majority of her life.
We have had Scout in our care since January 13th. After a skin scrape, our vet determined she had demodectic mange which covered a majority of her body. The treatment required to eliminate the mites is extensive and, due to her condition, will be a lengthy process. At the same time we were caring for Scout, our rescue had two additional special-needs dogs come into our care. Both have required extra care and our medical bills are now quite extensive for our small rescue. I do want to add that our vet has gone above and beyond what we ever expected to help us with these sweet dogs and we could not do this work without their help. Our rescue, however, relies solely on donations to care for our many animals. We have no paid staff; we are run by volunteers. All donations go straight back to the animals. The wonderful news is that Scout is improving every day and we hope that in another 5 to 6 months, this sweet girl will be healed and ready for her new home. Please consider making a small donation to help us cover the medical bills for this sweetheart. PETS is a 501c3 rescue organization and all donations are tax-deductible. For more information about PETS, please visit our website at www.panora.org/PETS. Thank you for helping Scout and the other animals in our care. Scout - January 15 - two days after her rescue.
